The Gathering Church in Parkersburg earned praise for its outstanding efforts during the frigid winter months of 2025, when it was the only on-shelter facility in the area to open its doors to the homeless, including allowing individuals to bring their pets.

In response to their critical work, the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation (PACF) has awarded The Gathering a $3,500 grant. This will help fund important renovations, including upgrading current carpeted flooring to sustainable laminate flooring at the church’s 14th Street location, ensuring that it remains a clean and welcoming space for those in need.

To facilitate this gift, the PACF processed a Sudden and Urgent Needs (SUN) grant. The funds are budgeted annually by the PACF to address time-sensitive, unforeseen needs and opportunities that arise after Safety Net Funds are distributed during the fall and spring grant cycles. In FY24, $24,486 was awarded to support seven critical needs in Pleasants, Wood, Roane, Gilmer, and Washington (OH) counties.

Pastor Melody Smith of The Gathering Church, commented, “The Gathering was blessed to be able to open our doors to provide a safe and warm place for people and animals during the cold weather emergency. We were able to be that safe place because the community rallied around us and provided every need. The grant from PACF is another way that community support is helping us to better serve our unsheltered friends. Our new waterproof laminate flooring will help us keep our facility cleaner and safe for pets and people. We are excited to be able to complete this project in the next couple of weeks and we are very grateful to those who give to make it possible!

The PACF’s Safety Net Fund was established in 2014 to assist the PACF service region and its citizens in times of critical need. The Safety Net Fund serves as a resource during emergencies, natural disasters, pandemics, and other crises, ensuring that vital community organizations can continue to provide essential services. Since its founding, the Fund has awarded nearly $400,000 to support the Foundation’s 11-county service area.
