In celebration of Earth Day 2025, the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation and Regional Affiliates (PACF) is proud to highlight the work of local organizations taking meaningful steps to protect and preserve our environment. Through PACF grant funding, community partners are bringing innovative, hands-on projects to life across the region, demonstrating the power of local action in creating a more sustainable future.

North Christian School
With support from PACF Community Action Grant funding, North Christian School is installing rainwater collection barrels as part of a new outdoor education initiative. This project is designed to benefit both students and the surrounding neighborhood by promoting water conservation and environmental awareness.

Waverly Activity Center
The Waverly Activity Center is establishing a community garden behind its facility, using repurposed materials to construct garden borders. This project not only promotes local food access and sustainability but also encourages community involvement and creative reuse.

Friends of the Ohio River Islands Refuge
At Buckley Island, the Friends of the Ohio River Islands Refuge used grant funds to support public engagement through a community tree planting event on April 19. This project is part of the organization's broader efforts to connect residents with conservation work and the natural beauty of the Ohio River Islands.

West Central Beekeepers Association (WCBA)
Through Community Action Grants from the PACF, the WCBA is expanding its outreach and education efforts by offering Beekeeping Education Classes in Calhoun, Roane, and Wirt Counties. These classes aim to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators while equipping participants with the knowledge to support local ecosystems.

The PACF’s Commitment to Sustainability
Demonstrating its ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, PACF utilized funds from the Building a Sustainable Futures Fund to install solar panels on the roof of its Home Office last year. Since installation, the Foundation has seen a 70 percent reduction in electric utility expenses—an impactful example of how sustainable energy investments can produce long-term benefits. This spring, three additional projects from area nonprofit organizations are under consideration for environmental grant funding through the “Building a Sustainable Futures Fund”. The PACF remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that enhance the quality of life in our region through conservation, education, and active community engagement.
