The Parkersburg Area Community Foundation & Regional Affiliates (PACF) is honored to announce the establishment of the Paul W. Merkel, III Memorial Fund, a scholarship created in loving memory of a spirited young man whose life was defined by his love of sports, family, music, and lifting up the underdog.

A 2005 graduate of Parkersburg High School, Paul Merkel was a proud member of the Big Reds soccer and track teams, serving as team captain and competing at the state level. His love for sports continued throughout his life, cheering on Manchester United, D.C. United, and his beloved Dallas Cowboys.

Paul’s light-hearted spirit, quick wit, and genuine kindness made everyone feel included and valued. Whether in his hometown of Parkersburg or in the many places life took him, such as Morgantown, Washington, D.C., Savannah, and the French Quarter of New Orleans, Paul had a gift for connection. He believed deeply that “nobody is perfect, but you matter.” His friends and family remember him for making others feel seen, welcome, and important.

To celebrate Paul’s legacy and his passion for soccer, the Paul W. Merkel, III Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating senior from Parkersburg High School who has demonstrated commitment and dedication by participating in the boys’ soccer program for all four years. This one-time award recognizes a student who exemplifies perseverance, teamwork, and spirit — qualities that Paul embodied both on and off the field.

“Paul believed in the importance of being a good teammate and a good friend,” said his mother, Sandra Guthrie. “He made everyone feel that they mattered. This scholarship is our way of carrying forward that message, to remind young people that their effort, heart, and kindness count.”

Soccer played a meaningful role in Paul’s life, providing joy, physical activity, and a sense of community. That love for the sport continues with his older brother Jacob and niece Jessica, who also share a love for the game. Through this fund, Paul’s family hopes to encourage young people to stay active, connected, and engaged with their community.

While the award is not reserved for the star player or top academic achiever, it celebrates the student who shows up, gives their best, supports their teammates, and leads with integrity. It is a gift that says, “You matter. Keep going.”

“The Merkel family’s generosity ensures that Paul’s legacy of kindness and sportsmanship will continue to touch lives for generations,” said Julie Posey, Senior Development and Stewardship Officer of the PACF. “We are honored to help share his story and steward this meaningful tribute.”

Through the Paul W. Merkel, III Memorial Fund, Paul’s family and friends honor his life and the impact he made on others, creating a lasting reminder of a life filled with heart, humor, and love for the game. Merkel, III Memorial Fund, gifts may be made online at www.pacfwv.com or mailed to PACF, PO Box 1762, Parkersburg, WV 26102, with “Merkel Memorial Fund” noted in the memo line.
