William Milfred Batten, Mrs. Francis Batten Young, and C. Eugene Batten established a fund memorializing their parents, Lewis A. and Gurry F. Batten. It was originally known as the Lewis and Gurry Batten Scholarship Fund and later was combined with the former Sand Plains Trust, which was established by trustees of the Sand Plains community to benefit students in the communities in which Parkersburg High School students reside. The income from the endowment fund is used to provide an annual scholarship award for a student graduating from Parkersburg High School, where all three Batten children graduated.
Recipients of the Lewis and Gurry Batten Scholarship Fund are selected by a committee appointed by the principal of Parkersburg High School on the basis of merit, need, motivation and character. Recipients must also be planning to graduate from an accredited four-year university or college.
