Giving

Established in loving memory of Paul William Merkel III, this scholarship fund honors a spirited young man whose life was defined by his love of sports, family, music, and lifting up the underdog. A 2005 graduate of Parkersburg High School, Paul was a proud member of the Big Reds soccer and track teams, serving as a team captain and competing at the state level. His love for sports continued throughout his life, cheering on Manchester United, D.C. United, and his beloved Dallas Cowboys.
Paul’s light-hearted spirit, quick wit, and genuine kindness made everyone feel included and valued. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life, whether in his hometown of Parkersburg, WV, or throughout his life’s journey through Morgantown, Washington, D.C., Savannah, and ultimately, the French Quarter of New Orleans. His memory lives on in those who knew and loved him, especially in the joy and laughter he brought to every room.
To celebrate Paul’s legacy and passion for soccer, the Paul W. Merkel, III Memorial Fund is awarded to a graduating senior from Parkersburg High School who has demonstrated commitment and dedication by participating in the boys soccer program for all four years. This one-time award recognizes a student who has shown perseverance, teamwork, and spirit -- qualities that Paul exemplified both on and off the field.
Through this scholarship, Paul's family and friends honor his life and the impact he made on others. It is a lasting tribute to a life filled with heart, humor, and love for the game of soccer.
