The Academy of Medicine established a fund at the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation in 1963 with funds remaining from polio inoculations. The original name of the fund was the Parkersburg Academy of Medicine Fund for the Pediatrics Department of St. Joseph's Hospital, created to support the pediatrics department at St. Joseph's Hospital. With the changes of St. Joseph's Hospital to a for-profit entity, the name and purpose of the fund was changed to the Parkersburg Academy of Medicine Advised Fund for Children's Health, an advised fund intended to benefit children's health needs in the area. The Academy of Medicine makes periodic recommendations on grants from the fund.
