In recognition and honor of Nancy C. Barton, her sons Greg (Class of '73) and Rick (Class of '69), established the Nancy C. Barton Scholarship Fund to provide educational support to Doddridge County students in 2015.

The Nancy C. Barton Scholarship provides a scholarship annually to a graduating senior and resident of Doddridge County High School. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be admitted to attend a full-time course of study leading to certification at an accredited vocational or technical school or be pursuing an Associate or bachelor’s level degree at a college or university in West Virginia. Students must have a minimum grade point average of at least a 2.0 or better on a 4.0 scale to apply for consideration. Recipients shall be selected based on academic ability – potential to be successful in their educational endeavors; and leadership ability as evidenced by participation in the life of their school or community or as illustrated by participation in athletics or in civic or church activities, with the exception that evidence of a strong work ethic, as illustrated by regular employment during one’s high school career.

Nancy, who passed in Feb. 2018, was a long-time resident and respected community member of Doddridge County who dedicated her life to supporting friends, neighbors, students, and family. She valued education and all activities involving students. Nancy attended many sporting events, committee meetings, fundraisers, church, and community activities to encourage not only her sons, but all students to be successful in every aspect of their lives. She believed in a strong work ethic, leadership ability, and pride in Doddridge County. With those qualities, she knew all students have the potential to be successful in their educational endeavors, community service, and their careers.

It was Nancy’s hope that all students realize the benefits of hard work to achieve their dreams and go on to be successful individuals, remembering to “give back” to Doddridge County.

Thanks to the generosity of Greg and Rick Barton, Nancy C. Barton’s life is honored, and many students are blessed with educational opportunities.
