The Larry D. and Margaret D. Brown Scholarship was created by Mr. and Mrs. Brown to support students attending college. They had no children of their own and wished for students to have the opportunity to benefit from a college degree.

Larry was born in Falls Mill, WV in 1939. In 1965, he married Margaret (Dolan) Brown, who preceded him in death in 2015. Mr. Brown was a graduate of Jane Lew High School with the class of 1958. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Berlin Crisis in 1959. Larry was a member of the Weston Lodge, Bigelow Chapter, St. Johns Commandery, and Nemesis Shrine Temple of Parkersburg, WV.

Margaret D. “Margie” Brown, was born in Clarksburg, WV in 1936. She was a graduate of St Mary’s High School. She was also a graduate of Morgantown Beauty School and attended Glenville and Salem Colleges.

The Browns were co-owners of Weston Transfer and Jack’s Septic service companies in Weston. They were active in many other civic organizations in Weston. They were members of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Weston, WV where they were very active in local church, community, and civic projects for many years.

Following a brief illness, Mrs. Brown passed in 2015 in Aiken, SC. Mr. Brown passed away in 2024 in Ocala, FL. Mr. and Mrs. Brown believed in hard work and perseverance to pursue their life goals and dreams.

This fund is used and distributed to provide a scholarship to graduating high school students and residents of Lewis, Gilmer, Braxton, Upshur, Harrison, Randolph, and Ritchie Counties in West Virginia.

To be eligible to apply for this award, students must have a GPA ranging from 2.5 to 3.2 on a scale of 4.0, or the equivalent; financial need for assistance with their education, and be planning to attend a full-time course of study at an accredited institution of higher learning or an accredited program of vocational or trade studies. This award is not intended for students whose financial needs have already been addressed by other significant awards such as the Promise scholarship.

Preference is given to students whose residence is in Gilmer or Lewis Counties.

Preference may also be given to students who are the legal dependents of employees who are associated with Wes-Jak, Inc.
