Mrs. Woods was a Wood County, WV native who grew up in Parkersburg. She was a 1967 graduate of the Parkersburg High School (PHS) where she was very active in softball, track and the Girls Athletic Association (GAA). A 1971 graduate of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania with a degree in teaching, Mrs. Woods returned to the Parkersburg area to pursue her passion. When the Blennerhassett Elementary School opened in the late 70s, she quickly transferred and taught physical education and health for the new school and remained there for many years. Mrs. Woods passed in June 1980.
The Janice Todd Woods Memorial Scholarship fund was established by Mr. Jeffrey Thomas Woods, Janice's husband, and their daughter Mrs. Abigail Haake in March of 2016. It is to be given to a graduating senior from PHS who intends to major in teaching of physical education or physical education science (sports management, athletic training, etc.) at an accredited college or university. Preference given first to students pursuing a degree in teaching of physical education. Recipient(s) of this scholarship shall be selected on the basis of interest in the expressed majors, financial need, and grade point average.
It is Mr. Woods hope that the scholarship fund will continue to help PHS graduates for years to come. "Janice greatly enjoyed her time at PHS and felt that her experiences there shaped her into the woman she became. With this scholarship, my daughter and I hope to help students at Janice's alma mater fulfill their goals and continue on the path to obtain a college degree."
