Coach and Betty Stansberry were recognized as the 2016 Doddridge County Citizens of the Year. In honor of their outstanding service to our community, several community members joined together to start a college scholarship fund with the Doddridge County Community Foundation (DCCF), a regional affiliate of the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation (PACF).

The Coach and Betty Stansberry Scholarship Fund is designed to provide financial assistance to students who are graduating from Doddridge County High School and who plan to attend an accredited post-secondary institution or trade school. Scholarship recipients shall be selected based on overall academic performance and financial need.

"Coach Stansberry, his late wife Betty, and their sons, Jeffrey and Rodney, make up one of the most beloved families in the West Union community," said Zona Hutson, DCCF Advisory Board Member. "The Stansberry family are true communitarians in every sense of the word. Coach has served as a city councilman, mayor, park board president, and has been an avid fundraiser for local athletics and many other nonprofits. And behind every good man, there was a great woman helping to get things done."

Coach Cline and Betty Stansberry both graduated from Doddridge County High School (DCHS).

Coach went on to serve in the U.S. Army through the Korean War, graduated from Salem College in 1952, and from West Virginia University, where he received his master's degree in education. He began his teaching and coaching career in 1953 with the DCHS football and freshman basketball teams. In 1960, Coach Stansberry made history in Doddridge County by starting the school's first track team, which has become one of the most successful track programs in state history.

Betty Lou Stansberry was born October 7, 1932 and had been employed as a secretary for the Doddridge County Health Department and Extension Office. She was a behind-the-scenes fundraiser for the youth of Doddridge County for 64 years. Betty was a former secretary for the 4-H, a member of the Eastern Star and a member of the West Union Baptist Church. She passed October 9, 2018 leaving behind a caring legacy.

The Coach and Betty Stansberry Scholarship Fund will help support Doddridge County youth forever and continue to honor two influential local citizens.
