The Arden E. and Geraldine M. Pugh Memorial Scholarship Fund was established through an estate gift to honor the shared life, military service, and community devotion of Geraldine and Arden Pugh. Created to support Wood County public school graduates attending West Virginia public colleges, universities, or community colleges, this endowed scholarship reflects the Pughs' enduring belief in the transformative power of higher education.

The scholarship assists Wood County residents who demonstrate academic potential, financial need, and a commitment to higher learning by maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA. To help students complete their degrees without interruption, awards may be renewed annually for up to five years, allowing many deserving students over time to achieve their educational and career goals.

Geraldine and Arden Pugh lived lives deeply rooted in dedication to their community, their work, and each other. Born in Mannington, West Virginia, Arden proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. Demonstrating a lifelong commitment to learning, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Marietta College before embarking on a long career as an accountant, notably with Borg-Warner. Geraldine, born in Barberton, Ohio, similarly dedicated her professional life to the local area, completing a 34-year career at the Commercial Banking and Trust Company.

Together, Arden and Geraldine built a vibrant life in Parkersburg spanning 53 years of marriage. Active members of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, both pursued rich personal passions. Geraldine was an avid reader and traveler, while Arden enjoyed outdoor photography and participated actively in local civic and fraternal organizations, including the Mt. Olivet Masonic Lodge, Nemesis Shrine, Scottish Rite, and the American Legion.

Following Geraldine’s passing in 2011, Arden sought a way to ensure that their shared values of hard work, personal growth, and community connection would endure. Upon his passing in 2024 at the age of 96, his estate gift entrusted the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation with carrying out that vision. Today, the Arden E. and Geraldine M. Pugh Memorial Scholarship Fund stands as a permanent tribute to their memory, opening doors for local students today and strengthening the region for generations to come.
