Abby Hayhurst’s journey from Detroit, MI to Parkersburg, WV has been one of dedication and passion for the arts. After moving to Parkersburg at the age of 8, Abby's roots took hold in this community, and she has spent much of her life contributing to its cultural landscape.
A proud graduate of Parkersburg High School (1969) and West Virginia University at Parkersburg, where she earned associate degrees in art, history, and English, Abby’s career has been diverse. She transitioned from a disc jockey at WXIL in the 1980s to managing the Cotterman Agency, a graphic design firm she helped run in Parkersburg.
In August 2004, Abby took on the role of Executive Director at the Parkersburg Art Center, a position she initially hesitated to accept due to her concerns about her experience in arts management. However, her growing interest and deep connection to the arts led her to embrace the role. Her mother, Mimi Seaman, had already played a pivotal role in the Art Center’s move to downtown Parkersburg from its Dudley Ave. location, and Abby was inspired to continue that legacy.
Abby’s tenure at the Art Center has been marked by her commitment to fostering artistic expression and overcoming the financial challenges faced by nonprofit organizations. Her leadership has been instrumental in maintaining and enhancing the center’s programs and exhibits.
To honor Abby Hayhurst’s contributions and dedication, friends and family established the Abby Hayhurst Fund for the Arts with the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation in 2018. This endowment fund will provide perpetual support for the Parkersburg Art Center, ensuring that Abby’s legacy of nurturing the arts will continue to benefit the community for generations to come.
